Latin: Sphaeria sinensis
Cordyceps literally means bark head, bat or swollen head, which is derived from the Greek word Kordyle and refers to the shape of the fertile body of this mushroom. Sinensis meaning from China and refers to the origin.

Cordyceps Militaris
Cordyceps naturally grows at 3000 to 5000 meters high wet meadows, at the base of trees. It is a parasitic mushroom, the mycelium of which grows on a rare Tibetan caterpillar, the Hepialus Armoricanus Oberthuer.
The caterpillar is infiltrated by the cordyceps spore and dies with the mummified outer surface completely filled by the mushroom mycelium (fungus). During the summer months, from the head of the dead caterpillar, sprout and grow the fruit body of the cordyceps.
Today, thanks to special techniques cordyceps can be grown on soya, rice or other food bases.

CS-4 variety
Cordyceps has always been a scarce and invaluable product. In ancient times, Cordyceps was worth more than silver. In order to meet the increasing demand, Chinese scientists started an ambitious project in 1972.
From all regions where the wild Cordyceps grows, the varieties were collected, and examined for chemical composition, medicinal properties, human consumption safety and the possibility of commercial growth. From over 200 varieties, they chose a cordyceps variety from Qinghai Province, an area that has traditionally been known for the high quality of Cordyceps.
This variety was called the Cordyceps CS-4. In 1987 CS-4 was authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Health as a medicine.
